Wychavon District Council had a clear vision for its Abbey Park play area. They wanted a space that complimented an Ancient Monument site that surrounded the abbey, and to create a play experience as unique as the surrounding landscape.
It is not unusual for clients to have exciting ideas for demanding sites, yet this particular site had a highly challenging design requirement of a south facing embankment slope. To meet safety standards and still fulfil the play requirements of the client, we had to think of something special.
And it came to us – why not bury the slide underground?! Not only did this meet safety standards but also created a far more exciting play experience. The design was further developed with a bespoke climbing feature above the slide adding even more play value to the space.
Since opening, the site has been very popular and been hailed by Play England as one of the great successes of the Play Builder programme.
