As part of a major improvement program at Howard Park in Kilmarnock, which saw more than £200,000 spent on a much needed facelift, £95,000 was committed to providing a ‘family-friendly casual recreation space’ in the town centre park.
The facelift included new play equipment, a ‘feature’ entrance wall, picnic tables, benches and signs and improved lighting.
Following the design and installation of several play areas in East Ayrshire this year, Jupiter Play were delighted to be given the opportunity to design an open play space utilizing some of the exciting new equipment on offer from German manufacturer FHS Holtztechnik.
Following the presentation of their design concepts the final design from Jupiter Play combined old favourites such as the Pod Swing, Cableway and Springers with exciting new items such as the musical rain stick and chimes, and the first site in Scotland to have an FHS Holtztechnik steel Multiplay unit- and what an impressive unit it is! The robust unit combines several large net climbing elements, look-out towers and balancing circuits to create an eye-catching focal point to the park.
As part of a public park, this is an open plan, accessible play area with plenty of room allowing for ease of movement around the equipment and is not restricted by fencing. This allows children to enjoy the park as a whole and explore beyond the fixed play equipment. The pathway running through the centre of the play area features curved seating and planters creating a sensory relaxation and social area within the park.
The local school children were involved in workshops with a local artist to create bespoke artwork giving Howard Park a unique feature with local input. It has been proved time and time again that when children are involved at this stage of a project they are more likely to appreciate and take ownership of a playpark improving the longevity of the facility.
