Fisherrow Links is a popular park situated beside the beach on the North side of Musselburgh, with stunning views of the Firth of Forth and Fife. The park is regularly used by football teams, walkers and families and the existing play area was in need of serious renovation. Although there are several other high quality play areas in Musselburgh, the community in the North of Musselburgh were in need of a facility for a variety of ages and abilities. There are many nurseries around this area and often the nursery children could be seen going on outings to the beach but they would seldom use the play equipment in the existing area. Something had to be done!
Following an initial ‘design concept’ presentation at the Brunton Hall featuring ideas from several play provision companies, a brief was produced by East Lothian Council for the Design, Supply and Build of the new play area.
The initial presentation generated great interest and feedback from the local community who, through completing questionnaires, were able to comment and input on the direction the play area design took.
Many elements of the initial design concept presented by Jupiter Play were highlighted in the design brief, with the community particularly keen on the Shipwreck theme and the use of play equipment echoing local historic landmarks, such as the Roman Bridge and Fisherrow Harbour.
The use of compass signs highlighting surrounding features added an educational aspect to the play area creating interest for other local amenities.
This was also the ideal site for Jupiter Play to include their new concept of Barrel seating. These seats are practical, fit well with the nautical theme and, most importantly, provide additional play value to the play area. Since installation they have been very popular and we are already looking for other sites to include these bespoke seats in.
This is the first site in East Lothian where we have included the Vitality fitness equipment from Proludic. This equipment is excellent for encouraging teenagers to get involved in physical activity and work off all the energy they have in a productive activity! It has been proven time and time again that providing youths with challenging activities reduces anti-social behaviour and encourages a healthy lifestyle.
As a member of the Jupiter Play team stays around the corner from the site, we know first hand that this is a very popular play area and a welcome addition to the facilities on offer in Musselburgh!
