Cowden Park, Dalkeith

Having identified the need for a Skate, Bike & Blade facility to encourage more children to participate in outdoor activities and lead healthier lifestyles, Midlothian Council produced a tender for the design and build of a wheeled sports facility to the value of £75,000 at Cowden Park, Dalkeith.

Within the tender, Midlothian Council had identified specific items of equipment that they felt would provide a varied experience for the users. Jupiter Play endeavoured to provide every item required and even included a larger version of the half-pipe to give an even more exhilarating experience for the users.

Once the tender was awarded to Jupiter Play a presentation evening was arranged to allow the community members to view the plans for the park and ask a Jupiter Play consultant questions about the project. The presentation was well received and a couple of amendments were made to the design following consultation with members of Skate Scotland, demonstrating Jupiter’s flexible approach to design.

Following the installation of the skate, bike and blade equipment the facility has been well used and has added a unique youth provision for children and teens to call their own.

It has been shown time and time again that providing challenging and exciting recreation areas for children and teenagers can have hugely positive effects on vandalism, anti-social behaviour and improved health through participation in exercise.
